Hello all. I am new to this tribe. I am a graduating senior in anthropology and was hoping some of you would be able to help me with my senior thesis.

It's on Jews with tattoos. Below are a list of questions that I need answered for research. If you guys or girls could answer these questions and then add pictures of your tattoos it would really help.

If you don't want others reading your answers just let me know and I will send you my e-mail.

Also I will share the paper with anyone who would like to participate. Thanks again.

5) What do you know about tattoos in Judaism?
6) How do your tattoos connect you with Judaism?
7) What Jewish laws would you say you follow?
8) What does Judaism mean to you?
9) How did family or fiends influence your beliefs?
10) How important is marring Jewish?

Yeah, the whole tattoo thing really bothers me. I just see the inventory mark on the Holocaust victims in our shule and I cannot imagine condoning this for myself or my children. I definitely do not want my children to tattoo themselves and I'm very clear about it with them.

i agree- i have no tatoos please dont get me wrong, but for the sake of the paper and to shed light on this from another view point-

my uncle is a holocaust surviver from auschwitz and still bares his numbers.

he and his son/my cousin have gotten several tattoos together.

one of those things that makes me think.

          Hi.
I'm jewish and I have tattoo's. I'm not reminded of the holocaust when I see the one's that lived though this in my shule. I respect survivors. But, there is no connection for me. My tattoo's are sacred and only for me. I generally don't flash them or discuses them because I find that when speaking to a jewish audience, It is unlikely that I can explain myself or why I have them. People begin to get self-righteous and quote thing out of the bible or make a reference to the holocaust. I say that we all have our struggles and we all try to understand it, often very differently. I don't know anything about the holocaust. I wasn't there. I don't need to be there. I am here in the present, living my life the way it feels right to me. What is done is done. But, I love myself and I love my body and I love my tattoo's, so that says a lot.

          ~peace~

It sounds like your uncle has a very positive and life-affirming view of the world and his place in it. I have a lot of respect for him, and for you in being able to share this with us.

I have one very personal tattoo on my upper arm. It's there to mark a very significant part of my life, and I got it for me, no one else.

The real question is regarding the word "incise" from Leviticus 19:28. Of course, one must account for the translations and changes in language though. Modern tatoos dont actually cut...instead they inject. Gotta love the loop hole...
