Jewish Polytheism

Any truth to the argument that prior to the Babylonian exile judaism was polytheistic?
I believe the argument comes from looking at the original Hebrew text, but since my Hebrew is a bit shoddy (by which I mean non existant aside from prayers I repeat but don't understand) I could be wrong.

What is your view on monotheism's influence on Judaism as a religion and culture?

Hello all. I am new to this tribe. I am a graduating senior in anthropology and was hoping some of you would be able to help me with my senior thesis.

It's on Jews with tattoos. Below are a list of questions that I need answered for research. If you guys or girls could answer these questions and then add pictures of your tattoos it would really help.

If you don't want others reading your answers just let me know and I will send you my e-mail.

Also I will share the paper with anyone who would like to participate. Thanks again.

0) age and sex
1) How would you describe your religious beliefs?
2) What do you do that is Jewish?
3) Why did you get each tattoo and what does each mean?
4) Why did you get other tattoos that did not have to do with Judaism?
5) What do you know about tattoos in Judaism?
6) How do your tattoos connect you with Judaism?
7) What Jewish laws would you say you follow?
8) What does Judaism mean to you?
9) How did family or fiends influence your beliefs?
10) How important is marring Jewish?
11) What historical events effect or have emotional influences on your beliefs?
12) How do you connect with Judaism?
Jesus‏

JESUS CHRIST+JESU KRISTE+YESHUA HAMASHIACH+JESUS CHRISTUS+JESU KRISTU+ISOUS HRISTOS

Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophesy and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. REVELATION 1:3

And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth." REVELATION 11:3

He who testifies to these things says, " Surely I am coming quickly." Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. REVELATION 22:20-21

+++

Everyone, has the responsibility to find the truth for themselves. What is stated below, must be researched and verified, so that every individual can then decide to accept, or discard it as myth. The only truth is God the Father, the Son our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Read the Bible, pray to the Holy Spirit for guidance and our Lord Jesus Christ will not abandon you, but will place the truth in your heart.

+++

We must not try to copy the world, but be different to it, as the example set by our Teacher, our Lord Jesus Christ. Being the same as the world, sharing its base values, being part of the fashion trends, is all part of Satan's system (Sex changes that are taking place ever more frequently and therefore not knowing anymore who is a man or a woman). The Pope of Rome is one of Satan's instruments (the Papists have immense power and wealth, our Lord Jesus Christ was humble and owned nothing). Talmudists/Zionists want to rebuild Solomon's Temple and proclaim their own false king of the world (there is only one King of the Jews and Orthodox Christians and that is our Lord Jesus Christ). Their power base is the U.S.A (Superpower of the world). They contol many governments, banks, newspapers, television stations (the media in general), etc. We must not forget the very elusive and cunning Masonic Lodges which form part of Satan's means to spread anti-Christian and heretic information. Television and video has been one of the most powerful tools of Satan, which has ruined the ethics which sustained our youth and the family unit. With pornography in all its forms, men have been misled and subsequently their women, a whole generation of our youth and their families have been devoured by Satan. We have forgotten about God, the Bible and prayer and have allowed ourselves to go down the road to hell and have fallen into Satan's trap (in other words we are slaves to flesh and our desires). Hedonism is the aim of humanity.

The group that is attempting to rule the world, consists of three member countries, U.S.A, Europe and Japan (3 presidents). Their central control, consists of 32 members (of the 29, 8 are Americans; 9 from Japan; 12 from the European Union (contolled from Belgium/Luxembourg). Head of the 3 member group is Rockefeller (his head quaters is in Rhodes, Greece; his specific influence is in the U.S.A and E.U). Whoever does not obey the orders of this group are murdered. Death is the penalty for disobedience. Another Satanic "club" is called, Bildeberg. They can destroy any government and put a new one together again. They can make a country vanish and create a new one too. 200 members, which include intelligence agencies (CIA; BIA; BND (Ger.); SIB (Ital.); SPELA (Fra.)). There are members who are involved with NATO and hold important positions in the US administration, etc. They hold an extremely harsh stance against the East, especially with Russia because of its Christian Orthodox heritage. They exterminate/demolish any opposition.

An enemy going back thousands of years is head quatered in China (the Himalayas/Tibet). The Seljuks come from that region, who are the ancestors of the Turks, who attacked and oppressed Christian Orthodoxy in Asia Minor and Greece. The Turks/Jews have tried many times to wipe out the Greeks and Christian Orthodoxy. They call the Greeks and Christian Orthodoxy, the people of the "Blue Trigramaton" (which is refering to the Holy Light that emenates from our Lord Jesus Christ's tomb). The roots of martial arts is that region spoken of above. Martial arts are Satanic and anti-Christian and yet has our youth spellbound under the innocent guise of sport/fitness. In the Himalayas there is a glass pyramid (Sambala), it has many entrances. This is where the White Brotherhood is based. It's aim is to destroy all the world's religions except its own. It has more power than the U.S.A. It has more resources at its disposal than all the governments in the world. It has infiltrated and controls many governments and religions (Roman Catholics, Protestants and Judaism). The First and Second World Wars were masterminded by them. They are going to start the Third World War too. The White Brotherhood works with the Bildeberg club and all the others. They are assisted by the Zionists. They created Hitler and introduced the Swastika (broken cross, that is what it means). Hirohito of Japan was responsible for a massive bloodbath, but he was not punished like the others, after the Second World War because he was a member of the world ruling 3 member group mentioned above. Grey Wolves (Turkish Muslims), are connected to the White Brotherhood. Only Grey Wolves members may rule Turkey. They must always mantain a harsh stance against Greece/Christian Orthodoxy (Turgut Ozal, was exterminated for his softer stance).

The White Brotherhood want to destroy the followers of Jesus Christ. They call His followers, bipods or two-legged ones. Their methods are many: thirst, hunger on a worldwide scale. All plants and forests must be destroyed. Wars, so as to ensure maximum slaughter. They refer to humanity as a chicken breeding farm. They destroy humanity with drugs; they have contaminated our drinking water (it has been doctored with medication); our food is also contaminated and our clothes too from the fancy washing powders that we use (that is why everyone is getting ill and they don't know why). Thirst on a worldwide scale, for eg.. Euphrates to be dried up because of Turkey, which will lead to a confrontation with Iran/Syria. Hunger, for eg., Russia was the world's wheat provider, even the U.S.A relied on her. The White Brotherhood ensured that Russia would starve. In Moscow young women give themselves for a plate of food. Homosexuality, the U.S.A being its banner. One can go on and on, but there will be no end then. It is devestating. But do not despair, if you are a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ because He has defeated Satan and the world.

(This is a summarized version and a translation of a tape recording in Greek, from a Greek Orthodox perspective ofcourse, given to me by a Monk at Calvary/Golgotha in Jerusalem, Christmas, 2001. I cannot divulge any names, nor my own because this is a very dangerous subject. You will have to verify the truthfullness of the matter yourself. Please excuse my errors of spelling or other. May God forgive me if I am wrong about any of this, but I do it with honest intentions. God bless you. From a humble follower of our Lord Jesus Christ.)

+++

"These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." JOHN 16:33

+++

"LORD JESUS CHRIST, HAVE MERCY ON ME."

Seeds of peace in the middle east?

Hay all!
I've tried to post a this before, but for some reason, it didn't registrar and folks couldn't read what I had written. So, I'm going to attempt to write it out again and hopefully this time, we'll have more responses,

Ok, so...a little info and background. I'm in Israel, and working on a project out here to grow herbs for the community. Also, wanting very much to have a program available for kids and their parents to learn about plants and how they communicate with us on all levels. It's really something that isn't being done here and I would like to bring this opportunity to light. I need some help. That's way i'm writing this request. We have a few green houses, so climate is not an issue. We need seeds! All different kinds, but organic. Herbs and winter vegetables.

The list for herbs:Elder flowers ,Yarrow ,Sage ,Rose hips ,Echinacea,Mullein,Astragalus,
Poke Root,Elecampane ,Thyme.

We are asking for 30 seeds each be sent to Israel.
We are asking for donations, since this project can really use all the help it can get and we really don't have the funds to get these seeds. Also, we request that the seeds are from your own garden and collected by you. It's a beautifal thing to know that the seeds that we are receiving are from people who cared for these plants and havested the seeds themselves. There is a story there and it makes it interesting to explain where these seeds came from and who cared for them. We like telling it this way.

Our request for organic Veggie seeds:
Celery ,Chinese leaves ,Dark greens ,Leeks ,Mushrooms, Squashes ,Winter roots ,Winter salads.
Tribe's response to complaint about porn

A photo of a woman exposing her genitals appears every time I go to a tribe I created. Apparently, it's a photo of one of the individuals who choose to join my site. I was offended by the photo (as were others) and wrote to the content manager. I was shocked at the response I got. Tribe felt that it was OK for this woman (and others) to post pornographic photos. Tribe needs to review it's code for Conduct and Content. If the rules have changed, they need to let decent folks know. Here is the E-mail string below.

*************************************
E-mail from me to the content editor:

"Hello, I would like to report a Pornography site called, “kinky mature women & we that love them”. It is connected through a member of my tribe, “The Over 40 Crowd”. It’s posting porn photos and other porn tribes next to my site when it is open. I would like to be disassociated with this tribe. Actually, I don’t think that porn should be allowed at all. If you can not remove the linkages to the porn, I will be forced to shut down the tribe, as I do not want to be associated with any pornography.

Thank you. "

Hi xxxxxx,

Thank you for your patience! We have determined that the tribes in question do not violate our Terms of Use.

Connected Tribes show you other Tribes that have the most members in common with the Tribe you're viewing. Our engineers used various calculations to come up with the most accurate portrayal of what your fellow Tribe members are into. Therefore, you cannot alter your Connected Tribes list. However, you can influence them, by inviting members from tribes you'd like to be connected with yours, and possibly ousting members from tribes you'd rather not be associated with.
Please note that the Connected Tribes module does appear in Private tribes.
If you have any additional questions at all, please feel free to reply to this message.

**********************************************
My reply:

Quite frankly, I am shocked at your response. I absolutely do disagree that a photo of a woman exposing her genitals should be displayed right next to my tribe, especially when my tribe is not related to that type of content in any way. I have attached a screen shot of her. Please look at the photo of the woman exposing herself on the left side of the screen. How could you possibly think that that would be acceptable for viewers? There are lots more photos on your site just like this one, which I sent to you, which you have obviously chosen to ignore. …And I’m not looking for them, they just display when I’m searching for non-sexual-oriented content.

Just in case you need a remedial review of your site’s code of conduct, here is the section that prohibits this type of material. What part of this do you not get?
--------------------------
1. Conduct and Content

While using or accessing the Service--directly or indirectly--you agree to take a constructive tone and practice good etiquette and courtesy and you agree NOT to:

b.post, publish, or transmit any text, graphics, or material that is illegal or violates local and national laws or that contains, encourages, advocates, or expresses: obscenity, pornography, sexually explicit conduct, child pornography, the making or buying of illegal weapons or illegal drugs, hatred, bigotry, racism, profanity, vulgarity or gratuitous violence or use of weapons;
------------------------------

I’m really embarrassed by the photo (and lots of other similar photos), and your site managers should be too. Sites like yours are chasing away lots of decent folks. Your assumption is that “everyone” likes to view smut and pornography. Guess what! Not all of us do. Get a clue... and shame on you!

People are talking about the matzo queen. candi has created a new niche. Strange but delicious. I learned about it through a coworker who gave me a package as a gift. WOW!!!

What's great about this idea is that whether you’d like to share the decadence with your co-workers, send your friends and family a care package they won’t forget or bring some good old fashioned chocolate matzo home, it’s always welcomed… http://www.Candismatzo.com has redefined an old age tradition and made it into something for everyone to enjoy. WELL DONE CANDI!!!

Orthodox help?

Ok,

So...this may seem odd, but here goes.

I was raised Jewish (reform) and converted to Paganism about 15 years ago. I’m pretty happy and very active in the Pagan community. I also still consider myself Jewish culturally and many of my rituals and activities are rooted in that culture.

So, someone very dear (a friend) has come back into my life after a long absence. She has recently converted to Orthodox Judaism. Her e-mails are full of lots of Jewish code words that I’m just so....at a loss on. Mostly because I was never Orthodox to begin with so a lot of the Jewish rituals she refers to I spend a lot of time on wikipedia trying to figure out, but I want to make sure that I don’t inadvertently say the wrong thing or make some horribly offensive comment that sends her running for the hills.

So...are there any landmines that I should know about (particularly about the role of women would be helpful) regarding Orthodox Judaism?

Thank you for any help you can give!

Chanukah Festival of Lights

Chanukah Festival of Lights
by Rabbi Alyjah Navy

http://aynsof.org
http://tribes.tribe.net/aynsof

At the Dawn and at the Dusk
of the 8 Days of Chanukah
stands the Hebrew Letter Chet ( The 8th Letter of the Hebrew Alphabet).
Chet speaks to us of a Dream ( Chalom).
And so... My Holy Brother Zechariah Dreamed... and then The Angel awakened him Thus:
"What do you See?" And My Holy Brother Zechariah answered Thus:
"I See a Lampstand All Of Gold,
with a Bowl above it. The Lamps on it are Seven in Number, and the Lamps above it have Seven Pipes; and by it are Two Olive Trees, one on the Right of the Bowl and one on its Left." Then My Holy Brother inquired of The Angel as to the Understanding of this most Holy Vision. "What do These Things mean, my lord?"
And then The Angel revealed: "This is the Word of the Lord:
Not By Might, Nor by Power, but by My Spirit...."
Thus Saith the Lord of Hosts Then, And so Saith the Lord of Hosts Now.
So, My Friends.... Let us Vanquish, the Tyrant of Hatred that spares no Faith, no Color, no Gender. Let us Liberate ourselves from the Delusion of the Sitra Achra that would deny us from Knowing Thus: The Light that rests within each of us, is the Light
that rests within our Neighbor as Well, so Let us try to Love our Neighbor as Ourself.
Jew or Gentile, Believer, or Non-Believer, Man or Woman, All Colors and Creeds.
After the Carving and the Hewing of the Sword, must come Wisdom:
This is the Beginning and the End of the Letter Chet: Wisdom (Chochmah).
What is the Chet in Wisdom? Chai Olamim.... Life Of All Worlds: Ayn Sof !
My Friends, when we Gaze into the Light, Let us Vision, the Seven Great Halls of Heaven
and Stand firmly on this Earth. Let us Remember, that each of Us is One Holy Reflection of the Infinite. Let us Remember, the Sacred Preciousness of All Life.

I have a teenage daughter (15) whom I want to date only Jewish boys. She and mom think I am being too restrictive. Figure if I come up with the problem I should try to come up with some solutions. Anyone know of (15-16) year old teenage Jewish boys in the Baltimore area (near BWI airport is better) who are also looking?

The Story of Esther - In theaters today, Oct. 13th

Gener8Xion Entertainment presents the beloved Old Testament story of Esther as never seen before. One Night With the King is an epic motion picture set in an ancient and exotic world of adventure, intrigue and romance, that follows a young Jewish orphan who rises from peasant to Queen of Persia only to face the annihilation of her people.

....coming out on Oct. 13th- Today! To check your area, go to: http://8x.ziplocator.com/

One Night With the King (Gener8Xion Entertainment)- Trailer:
http://www.8x.com/onenight/trailer/video_trailer_update.htm

Starring Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif, along with the renowned John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings trilogy), Luke Goss (Blade II, ZigZag), John Noble (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King), Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister (Next Friday), James Callis (Bridget Jones Diary, Battlestar Galactica), Jonah Lotan (24, The Jacket) and Hollywood newcomer Tiffany Dupont.

Beautifully shot by Cinematographer Steven Bernstein (Like Water, For Chocolate; Monster, etc.) it is shot completely on location in Rajasthan, India. There were no sets, just magnificent real places like the palace, which is breathtaking. They used candles and torches to light most of the film – very little electric light. Every costume is hand made and amazing. Basically, it sounds like the entire film is a piece of art. :)

Taken from the website:

ONE NIGHT WITH THE KING

At the height of ancient Persia, lovely Hadassah grows up in Susa, capitol of the empire, sheltered under the watchful eye of her Uncle Mordecai, a scribe in the royal palace. Orphaned by the murder of her parents at a young age, she spends her days reading to the local children and dreaming of returning to Israel, the homeland of her people.

Unbeknownst to Hadassah and Mordecai, Haman the Agagite, descendant of the Jews mortal enemy and the man responsible for the slaughter of her parents, capitalizes on a palace culture beset by treachery and intrigue, setting in motion a series of events that will bring about a centuries old blood quest to destroy the Jews. Using the ruthless plotting of the princes to his advantage, Haman baits them into trapping King Xerxes into banishing the Queen for her stance against a looming war with Greece.

With the King left alone and desperate to live up to and avenge the battles of his father, the princes press upon Xerxes that a king soon to depart for war must leave behind a queen to keep the people unified. Thus word is sent out and every young maiden through out the empire, including Hadassah, is rounded up and taken into the palace for a season of preparation before being presented before the King.

Warned by Mordecai to keep her Jewish identity a secret, Hadassah changes her name to Esther and adapts quickly to life as a Queen’s candidate. Her innocence makes an immediate impression on Hegai, the King’s royal eunuch assigned to oversee the candidates’ preparations. While the rest of the harem plot and scheme over the potential riches that lay before them, Esther wins favor by seeking not what she can gain, but what stirs the passions of the King himself.

Like a fairy tale come true, Esther’s intelligence and wonder capture the heart of the King like no woman ever has. But becoming Queen is nothing like she dreamed. She quickly finds herself in a dangerous world of politics when a plot is discovered to poison the king. This is only the beginning, however, for just as Esther has risen to favor and honor, so too has Haman, who through a series of Machiavellian double crosses, has maneuvered himself into the powerful position of being named Prince. Now with the war against Greece in jeopardy due to a shortage of funding, Haman launches his ultimate plan, convincing the King that the necessary funding can be raised by the slaughter of the Jews and the confiscation of their wealth and property.

Meanwhile, Esther discovers that Haman was indeed the one who killed her parents, but finds herself helpless to do anything to stop him. Her own relationship with the ever-more-paranoid Xerxes has crumbled to pieces due to her inability to disclose the secret of her background and she is dangerously close to seeing the former Queen’s fate befall herself.

With time running out, and Haman himself becoming more suspicious of her secret, Mordecai informs Esther that the Jews only hope is for her to risk her life and go before the King unsummoned (a crime punishable by death) to intercede for her people. It is then that Esther utters those fateful words that have rung through out the centuries, “If I perish, I perish,” as she races off with one last chance to save her people.

Founded in December 2004, Havalight is a community-oriented organization targeting the upscale international Jewish audience in New York. Havalight events are planned 2-3 a month at various locations throughout NYC. A theme is usually created for every one of these events to keep every one of our celebrations unique. Our one of a kind events have earned us the reputation of NYC‘s hippest Jewish organization. Our themes can vary from Jewish Holidays, to garden parties, to fund raising, and everything in between. We ensure the quality and the exclusiveness of our events by promoting them to a very selective group of people.

Everyone can access the website, but only our members can actually register for the planned event. Members can either be grandfathered in or invited by an existing member. Our membership is free, but everyone gets screened to ensure a professional, upscale, interesting crowd.

A New Blog, or, Trying to Start a Dialogue.

Hi Everyone,
I have created a blog for GesherCity community members (a continental program for Jews in their 20's and 30's), as well as the 20's and 30's public at large. The goal of the blog is to generate a dialog on the issues facing 20's and 30's in developing Jewish identity and community, and alos let people who are interested know about some of the options available for us.

I will be telling just about everybody I can think of about this blog and encouraging them to post comments and new discussion topics. I'm also looking for good writers. If you have an interest in the subject and woould like to post topics nad not just comments let me know. If you have thoughts or ideas that relate, please feel free to post, and please pass this along to anyone you feel might have something to contribute or might just find this interesting. The more traffic, the better the blog will be, and the higher the visibility will be.
Thanks,
Adam

The Rising Cost of Integrity

Someone on http://www.JewishConnection.com sent me this article:

"It seems that Yeshiva University is in yet another scandal over it's policies and treatment of homosexual students. According to the NY Post, AECOM student Jeevan Padiyar, a homosexual student, was harassed over the passed three years and eventually dismissed from the school. Padiyar alleges that his treatment was purely based on his sexual orientation. While such allegations are normally difficult to prove, Padiyar has produced a particularly incriminating memo (pdf) allegedly sent by Dr. James David, the Associate Dean for Students.

This of course is only the most recent instance in YU's long history of questionable dealings with homosexual students. However, the previous cases dealt mostly with treating homosexual couples as married, a legal status which is still being debated. This accusation is by far the most direct challenge to YU's general attitude and the evidence most explicit (uncharacteristically so for YU).

From the institutional side, these scandals are directly related to YU's decision long ago to become a secular institution. Despite having a name like "Yeshiva" would imply "religious," but officially, as YU frequently asserts that it is not a "Jewish" institution, but rather "under Orthodox auspices."1

I find two possible reasons for YU assuming this label. First could be the practical effects of secularization such that to be accepted in the secular world and compete academically with other institutions, YU would have to shed some degree of its religious baggage.

The other and most obvious reason for YU's dubious classification is simple economics. Were YU to designate itself as a religious institution, it would be ineligible for federal funds. I have no idea how much money is at stake. Presumably, at the time the decision was made, YU's financial situation was tenuous enough such that it needed the government money in order to survive. However, as of 2004 YU's endowment is just over $1.1 Billion. Though I am unfamiliar with the economics of universities, I'm assuming YU is in fairly decent financial shape.

Ideologically, the costs of YU's institutional designation are much higher and gradually rising. Since YU cannot discriminate against protected groups, it must adapt even when such groups contradict it's religious convictions. Twenty years ago, homosexuality was popularly considered deviant behavior, but today society is significantly more tolerant. Twenty years from now, who knows what else will be acceptable by society's standards, but YU will be forced to adjust.

Even if for the sake of argument we assume that Mr. Padiyar fabricated the entire story and the memo, this is still a headache YU could do without, but one which it has brought upon itself. Religiously, YU is entitled to have its own opinion of homosexuals - Jewish or otherwise - but if it wishes to conduct itself primarily by religious rules, it cannot pretend to be a secular institution. At some point, YU must choose to either rescind its decision and become a fully religious institution or it can continue as is, provided it finally accepts and deals with its own compromises lest it forget another Jewish value - mid'var sheker tirchak (Ex. 23:7)."

What od you all think of this?

learning hebrew with proof from remote locations

Shalom

I like to learn hebrew / ivrit - for the ancient scriptures but also the spoken word in today's Israel. I'm living quite remote without connection to Jewish community, but an ongoing fascination for Jewish culture. I did find some excellent looking materials in the net, like hebrew4christians.com or foundationstone.com.au. I also checked out hebrewonline.com. I can start with those, but to get trained orally / by the ear too, I would need some more practical education... However, I'd like to attain a diploma or certificate for my language skills to come one day... So is there - as there is Cambridge for English or DELF for French - a kind of international respected proof I can go for? Do you know particularly recommendable trainings for them?

Thanks a lot for your advice and rest assured, I'm far away of having missionary background / intention or fixed christian ideas. I do merit the spring of "our" monotheism and not forget about the fact Jesus was a Jew.

Hello,

I am writing an article about Passover and a series of other articles about Judaism. I would appreciate if people could share either some memories of their favorite Passover seder or how they celebrate Passover.

This article will be published at associatedcontent.com. You can read my articles at associatedcontent.com/acohen843.

Books - Rashi's Daughters Book One Johoved

This is a fascinating historical novel about Rashi, his three daughters and the vineyard they kept in Troye's France almost 1000 years ago. It gives a very detailed accounting of what life must have been like for the Jews of Europe at that time.

What suprised me was the emphasis on demons and curses and how to avoid them. I suppose I didn't think that a family that was this religious would have indulged in that sort of a belief system. Also, the differences between how Christian and Jewish couples view the marriage bed was quite striking as well. The marital relationship appears to have been much more tender and revered.

There are two more books, one about Miriam and another about Rachel, that I look forward to reading.

Socially and Environmentally Conscious Jew? Have your voice heard now!

Friends- I am proud to be on the slate of the Green Zionist Alliance. Please read this article written by one of my colleagues and vote for us at www.greenzionism.org :)

Why Socially and Environmentally Conscious Jews Need to Vote

in the World Zionist Congress Elections.

By Noam Dolgin, Green Zionist Alliance

Welcome to the Israel of the 21st century, a bustling western country, a world leader in technology and medicine and yet a country that many people have difficulty taking pride in. While mainstream Jewish leadership around the world cries for solidarity with the Jewish State, many progressive Jews are rejecting Israel outright and distancing themselves from the Zionist movement. This is in stark contrast to our love for Zion, the land, the culture and the history which most of us feel deep within our souls.

Fortunately we do have a venue to voice our concerns loudly and to effect real change. A small number of progressive Jews are working to create change in Israel through the elections to the World Zionist Congress. All 5 Million Jews residing in the United States have a vote, yet less than 0.2% do. Through the proportional representation system, it only takes 600 votes to earn a seat at the Congress. In no other election can your voice be heard so loudly, so make it heard now. Visit www.congressofthejewishpeople.org to register and vote online today.

The Congress, founded in 1897 by Theodor Hertzl, continues as the primary voice for Diaspora Jewry in Israel and the major conduit for Diaspora funds. Through a strong representation at the Congress by progressively minded parties, we can help guide Israel forward in the years to come and ensure that millions of dollars are directed towards projects that invest in diversity, peace and the environment. If socially and environmentally conscious Jews do not vote, than the only ones who do are the ones who support the status quo, and that is unacceptable.

The Jewish people’s relationship to the land of Israel goes far beyond the current nation state. Zion is at the center of our stories and our prayers. Like a salmon migrating from the middle of the ocean to the exact riverhead at which it was born, the Jewish people are deeply connected to our ancestral home of Israel. As we witness social and environmental degradation in Israel, we want to help, to work for a brighter tomorrow.

I am proud to be involved in the World Zionist Congress elections because I believe we can make a difference. Every day I hear news of small victories by Israelis working for a better tomorrow. Many of those victories are supported by the hard work of Diaspora groups such as the Green Zionist Alliance from the last Congress through today.

I am running for the Congress with the Green Zionist Alliance (www.greenzionism.org/campaign.html), a slate of passionate individuals dedicated to creating a just and sustainable society at peace with its people, land and neighbors. I hope to have your mandate in our mission of Working Today for Israel Tomorrow.

Whether you vote for our slate or one of the other progressive voices, please VOTE and vote now. Voting costs $7 ($5 for students), a small expense to ensure that a progressive voice is heard.

You have a chance to help shape the future of the Middle East and the Jewish people. Don’t let this chance pass you by. It only happens every four years and registration ends Feb 15th.

Noam Dolgin is Chairperson of the Green Zionist Alliance www.greenzionism.org/campaign.html and a proud Progressive Zionist. Contact noam@greenzionism.org

Hanukkah Poem

On Chanukkah
My sweet father
Lit the menorah and sang
the song for us.
The candles burn very bright,
and then he goes back to work.

I stayed and stared at the candle's flame.

Slowly they started to move
with individual presence,
and the voices of my Jewish ancestory
began to speak to me through
the lights of the menorah.

There was fathers and mothers
and aunts and uncles who
love me dearly, and as the
flames danced and told their stories,
I opened up and remembered my
love for them.

They said that no matter what,
they are always with me.
In fact if you listen closely,
you can hear their voices now.

Shalom.

I have a frustration

And since the judge says I’m no longer allowed to scream at people in the street, I'll share it here with you.

I'm afraid for humanity. I’m afraid of humanity. We seem to be welcoming, with open arms, a blissful stupidity. We grind our engorged glands on any idea, product or available body that won’t upset our bliss. Passion without consequence. Death without the mess of organ failure or having our fluids drained and replaced with coca cola. Which I have been assured will improve my sex appeal, or at the very least get me laid. And if it doesn’t, well, there are prescription for that. But that’s not really my anger. My anger, what really reaches down in me and grabs my hate by the balls for a good squeeze, is that we seem to be taking pride in forgetting how to look. I don’t mean see. I wouldn’t ask that much of the radiated primates I look at every day. But they don’t even look.

“And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.”

Men and women of faith are a towering sight. A beauty of passion to behold. But tell me you can stand in the face of an examined life and dedicate yourself to THAT. Children want to be firemen and dancers and doctors and lawyers and hitmen, but who dreams of becoming an ostrich when they grow up. I was six when I learned that sticking your head in the sand gets you kicked in the ass. Is it possible that we have all completely forgotten Saturday morning wisdom. Don’t strap a ballistic missile to your back in the hopes of getting ahead, and sticking your head in the ground gets you kicked in the ass. Simple wisdom for simple minds. But someday, eventually, we are suppose to grow up. Someday we are supposed to get more complex. Not all of us. I don’t expect us all to stand erect and recite Foucault, but shouldn’t there be at least a nod in that directipon? Am I so completely fucking wrong to expect when I run screaming down the street naked and raging about the invisible kings and queens pulling our little strings, a resonance with just a few more people. Are we really content to be handed our lives gift-wrapped. I’m not asking us all to lather up in patchouli, reject leather and personal hygiene in order to protest the cause du jour, but can we really make it from start to finish without actually bothering to look out the windows in our heads and gasp. It’s too hard, too strange, too foreign, no fun, too much god-damn effort. Are we really so weary that we can’t even be fucked to make the effort any more. And if so, how did we get here. Where did we choose the fork that said, “Fuck it. As long as it isn’t too much work.” When did we vote? Was I asleep? Why didn’t any one wake me? I could’ve been a swing vote.

And the worst part of it all, the absolute fucking limit, is that I’m preaching to the god damn quire. I’m suited up in my holy vestments, my erection in one hand and a camera in the other, drunk on tequila and spewing my confusion and disappointment and rage and sadness; and the only people listening, the only ones who will set foot onto my holy ground, are the devout. I have no missionaries to spread my seed. I can make my art, and shout my toasts, round after drunken round, and the only people who will ever hear me are the ones who already share my opinions. I make art for artists and critics, and people who like artists, and sleep with critics, and nothing ever changes. And shame on you for sleeping with critics. There is a danger of them reproducing.

I learned it all in art school. The only people show up, are the people who go see art. And if you stand in the streets and fling your art at people like a monkey with his feces, all they see is some lazy, liberal, Commie but they never LOOK. They don’t actually see. They’re watching the movie behind their eyes, taking short breaks for paid ad time, like brief drug trips. We don’t need the confusion or the discomfort of seeing, and looking is one too many steps on the path of actually having consider. And consideration is all together too close to change. And besides, if we did that, the economy would collapse.

I am writing a book entitled "Hello Babylon", and I have a private focus group on tribe. There are about 70 members, but not very many that are actually actively responding and giving feedback, which I sometimes need. This book and it's publishing are part of my "manifestation" plan.

Would anyone here be interested in participating in the focus group?

Where Heaven Touches Earth ®
RAINBOW Laws
Noah's Seven Laws for Universal Humanity
Printable Version (PDF)

The Rainbow Covenant
All humanity on the Earth--as well as the creatures of the land--were uprooted and destroyed by the waters of the Flood in Noah's time. Noah and his family alone--along with the selected animal species--remained afloat on the waters until G-D's fury subsided. The reason for the destruction was disregard for the first Six Laws which G-D gave to Adam and Eve and their descendants. People were unwilling to change their evil ways. Humanity had become so corrupt that no repair was possible. The waters subsided. After 365 days in the ark, Noah and his family--along with all the animals--made their way onto dry ground into a new, cleansed world. Noah sacrificed to G-D, and G-D caused a rainbow to appear and said that it would be an eternal sign of the covenant between G-D and Noah (and his descendants), and all the Earth. That rainbow covenant symbolized a vow that G-D would never again bring a flood into the world to destroy all flesh. The Almighty reaffirmed to Noah the original Six Laws given to Adam and Eve to regulate human societal behavior (the relationships between G-D and individuals, and person to person) and added the Seventh Law after the Flood, hence the Seven Laws of Noah. This was a fresh beginning for the world.

G-D loves us and all His creation absolutely! He gave us the Seven Laws to protect us from destroying ourselves. The Seven Laws are the foundation for a G-dly human, earthly society. People are created in G-D's image. We are loved.

It's said by rabbis and scholars of the Torah and Talmud that to actually see a rainbow is something negative. It means that there is the need for judgment, but there is restraint from on High. It is known that in the generation of the Rashbi (Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai) that a rainbow was never seen due to his extraordinary holiness - he protected the world. This was in the the mid second century CE.

The Seven Laws of Noah are directly taken from the first of the five books of the Torah which is called Genesis (Bereishis). The Torah is the first and holiest section of the Bible. These Seven Laws are binding upon all humanity. The descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who are known as the Jewish people received the Torah from G-D directly with an additional set of laws that are binding upon them for a total of 613 laws. The Jewish people, the "Light Unto Nations", have the stewardship of teaching humanity the Seven Laws of Noah.

RAINBOW Law # 1
One G-D (Creator of Time, Heaven and Earth)
Acknowledgment of One Almighty Timeless Creator (G-D). As well as not giving credibility to any other natural or unnatural entity, idol or phenomena. Even if there is an illusion of creative, supernatural or magical powers. G-D stands alone, no partners.

RAINBOW Law # 2
Blasphemy of G-D's name is forbidden (Innuendoes and insults of all types are included)
Not to take any of G-D's various names in vain. Not to use one of G-D's names in any disrespectful fashion or out of context. Fear of G-D has a very close interrelationship with this law and concept.

RAINBOW Law # 3
Do not murder
Mankind is G-d's most precious creation. Both body and soul are created in His image. The act of murder includes the intentional killing of a human being, suicide, and by most scholarly opinions, aborting a fetus after a 40 day period of gestation except to save the mother's life. The act of killing for self defense at any time or during times of war is not included in the prohibition against murder.

RAINBOW Law # 4
Immoral sexual acts are forbidden
Sexual relations are forbidden with certain relatives. This includes a son with a mother (even if his birth was a result of rape or seduction), a daughter with a father, a son with a father, a father with a daughter or a son with his father's sister or a mother's sister. Other totally forbidden relationships include a man with another man's wife, a man with another man (homosexual relations), any person whether male or female with an animal. Lesbianism is considered an immoral and unnatural relationship (though not stated as forbidden) that destroys the order of the world. Prostitution goes under the same category (not strictly forbidden according to the law) but is outside the realm of morality and violates the spirit of the Seven Universal Laws of Noah.

RAINBOW Law # 5
Do not steal
Theft is the broadest category with the most intricacy of all Seven Laws. The prohibition of theft is equally applicable to men and women in every aspect, detail and category. Theft is punishable regardless of whether the act was secretive or public. The courts will deal with revealed, known lawbreakers. Secretive theft will ultimately be punished by the Hand of Heaven. Stealing includes any amount of money or material goods, large or small, even the insignificant. Intellectual property such as music, books, formulas, programs and photographs is owned by the copyright, trademark or patent holder. Kidnapping is a form of theft as is rape or seduction. False weights and measures, overcharging, misrepresentation and lying are all forms of stealing. A dispute or the injuring of another person carries a liability that must be paid. Trespassing is a form of theft as well as the moving of landmarks on property. The withholding of wages that come due to a worker according to agreed upon terms is a form of theft as well as the failure to return a borrowed object. Dealing in stolen property falls into this category. An insidious form of theft is pollution and environmental destruction as well as quality of life issues. This includes the damaging of air, water, sight (offensive eyesores) and sound (decibel increases). Toxic chemical and/or radioactive level increases in the environment is a form of theft and may lead to the killing and/or damaging the health and well-being of the resident population.

RAINBOW Law # 6
Creation of a judicial system
The establishment of courts of law to institute justice, truth, righteousness and morality over society is an essential institution. The primary job of the court system is to uphold the Seven Laws of Noah as well as to establish a police force and army as needed. A judge in the Noahide court system should have as much of these seven qualities as possible given the society of the day: 1) wisdom, 2) humility, 3) fear of Heaven, 4) fear of sin, 5) contempt of ill-gotten money, property, or gain, 6) love of truth and 7) beloved by his fellow men as well as an excellent reputation. The judicial system of any country is a branch of the government. In a democratic society where judges are either elected by the people or appointed by elected government officials, each voting citizen needs to really consider, based on the Seven Laws of Noah, "who would G-d vote for?". An important quote to ponder upon: Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: "The world endures on three things - justice, truth, and peace, as it is said: 'Truth and the verdict of peace are you to adjudicate in your gates.'"

RAINBOW Law # 7
Do not eat the flesh of a living animal (added after the Flood)
Most authorities agree that this commandment was given by G-D to Noah and all of his descendants after the Flood (Mabul). The reason for this is because human beings were vegetarians before the Flood and for the act of saving the land animals, G-D gave us the right to consume them as well as to give us nutritional strength. The law states that an animal must be completely dead before any of its flesh can be consumed.

The above Laws are merely a very brief explanation of each of the Seven Laws of Noah. To learn more contact us for recommended reading materials and to find an authoritative and reliable teacher in your area.

Failure of a society to recognize, enforce and uphold, on a personal and official level, these Seven Laws of Noah will lead to its eventual destruction. G-D has given the Seven Laws to humanity as instructions for living. Their observance will lead to personal fulfillment and Peace on Earth.

a poem i found while celebrating

i went to a different shul than usual for kol nidre services and in the machsor i found this poem. it echoed in my head through my yom kippur. i am looking at it again and again and i think it will shape my year to come. i just thought i would share. i wish i had written the holy teacher who authored it down as well, but i ran out of room on the tiny paper i was scribbling frantically on. the little girl i had borrowed it, and the pencil from desperately wanted her entertainment back!

(translated from the hebrew)

whom can i accuse, of whom can revenge demand
when i have borne deep suffering at my own hand

other hearts have held hatred for me
but my own heart hates me more than anyone knows

my body bears the wounds of relentless foes
but none can match my self inflicted wounds

i have been seduced for my destruction
but none have lured me more than my own eyes

i have been burned by countless fires
but none compare to the heat of my own desire

in traps i've been ensnared by old and young
but none have trapped me better than my own tongue

bandits have pursued me fast and fleet
but none pursue me faster than my feet

pain overwhelms me but no pain more than my rebellion
anguish increases but never faster than transgression

when can i blame, how can i function
when i am the source of my own destruction

i seek shelter for my soul which you alone did fashion
for you, our g*d and king, are enthroned upon compassion

Ok, so I forgot what this thread was started by.

something about the religion jesus would have been serving, the way his followers would have recieved him, etc.

I'm going to go home now, but i'd love to see why you think jesus though himself to be the messiah. then i'll give you "my" (well, not really my, as i crib most things - grin) reason for why it was likely added 50-100 years after his death.

Idolatry

I've been embroiled in a discourse about "real Judaism" again.... An argument with FJ and Aileron about who "counts" as Jewish. This is an argument I'm weary of, and that has been in my face for 12 years now. The inconsistency between using Judaism as a spiritual springboard for a real relationship with our Creator vs. a list of rules and regulations to do perfectly so you can point to yourself and insist that the quality of your perfection is better than the quality of some one else's - is painful to me. It is on a global level, but it is on a personal level too.

I had certain hopes and dreams affiliated with my quest into our faith that have simply not been realized. At times, yes, wonderfully so. But mostly I'm exposed to a myopic view...and I am starting to think it's just simply "wrong" and nothing I say or do, no fight I present is going to matter. Let the black hats take over the world of Judaism once and for all and watch them implode with self righteousness and just be done with it already.

I call it Imabettajewthanyew....to be funny, but honestly it doesn't make me laugh much anymore. It makes me stay away from shul, away from the community, and it makes me want to protect my children from people like these instead of expose them to them. Not exactly the way I'd planned it at all.

So I'm cleaning the floor after the last exchange, watching the dust come up on the cloth as I wipe it clean. I'm thinking about High Holidays and Pesach and how we actually practice our faith, and the way we ask for forgiveness. The dust is wiped away and floor shines, and isn't that what is supposed to happen to us now?

The thought of what we become "slaves" to encroaches. I wonder to myself, if we are just dispassionately following a rule we refuse to understand the spiritual significance of, aren't we slaves to something else yet again? Is it blasphemy to say that following rules, especially rules that have been distorted and twisted for the aggrandizement of an individual or a small group of Jews is nothing more than idolatry with a capital "I"? If I worship money, if I worship another God, if I worship a person....and I call it religion or I call it spirituality that is Idolatry. Isn't it possible then to contort our own understanding of our own faith in the exact same way?

I just can't believe in my heart of hearts that God wants me to hate someone else because they don't understand things in the way that I do. Or that it makes me "right" and them "wrong" not to have the same understanding. I can't believe he doesn't want me to treat other people with value and respect and honor, to love them into healing.

It's times like these that I find our faith, or what is presented as our faith by the very few, a burden and not a joy. It's times like these I want to reject the structure and the dogma and the people and be free of the whole thing. How many times in my life have I seen what I set out to be a good and positive journey shat upon by people who thwart the good?

Countless. Unfortunately it has been countless times.

Isralie v. Hebrew

Ok, i have a lingustic question that ticked my mind, when listening to Noa. How similar is modern State Isralie to so called "traditional" hebrew; and, if anyone knows, what is generally the blends of hebrew with other langauges that are spoken in daily life of Orthodox jews who choose to cloister themselves. In documentaries, I often hear germanic sounding words, mixed with what i woudl suspect are hebrew words.

thanks.

and, if anyone is fluent in modern Israli, feel like translating part of a song?

(author unknown)

On the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, there is a ceremony called Tashlich. Jews traditionally go to the ocean, a stream, or a river to pray and throw bread crumbs into the water. Symbolically, the fish devour their sins.
Occasionally, people ask what kind of bread crumbs should be thrown. Here are suggestions for breads which may be most appropriate for your specific sins and "misbehaviors":

For ordinary sins
White Bread

For erotic sins
Fresh Bread

Anyone know how jewish canonization affected/was affected by Christian canonization? For instance why are the same books in the Torah/Prophets etc. as in the OT ? You'd think some of the Essene stuff would have been of note?

Also, I don't think rabbi's usually quote chapter and verse. (Not sure, just what I've noticed) Why is this?

I couldn't find this in the FAQ.

From an orthodox (or other) viewpoint why have the animal sacrifices been stopped? Is it because of the destruction of the temple? If so what is now used for propitious atonement?

I'm an atheist from a christian cultural background. I have researched christianity for several years and understand it better than many pastors and priests but when it comes to judaism I'm pretty dumbed up.

I am looking for materials on Judaic view of Jesus. I already have "Jewish people Jewish thought" and several conversations with Rabbis, other books etc, but the subject is cursoraly treated.

It is probably an FAQ, but I'd like to see the subject treated more in depth than a dismissal based on monotheism and antedated scriptural materials. I would also be interested in the thoughts on the Kaballah guy's potential messiaship etc. from a literalist orthodox perspective...

Anyone point me in the right direction? In return I can answer your most esoteric christany questions.

Thanks in advance!

I gave a donation to the Red Cross earlier today for the Hurricane victims. I was surprised to learn that no Jewish organization was listed along with the Salvation Army and Christian Charitiies. Why this happened, I don't know, but if you wish to donate to a Jewish relief organization, please visit:

Hi I'm new to this tribe. I want to ask:

What do you feel makes one Jewish? What makes someone NOT Jewish?

Is Jewish-ness, like Chinese-ness, a linguistic differentiation or a personal choice based on appearence or belief system?

What might be a central image or myth of Jewishness, in your opinion?

Warm regards,

Paul Bard.

Jewish Enough?

I identify myself as Jewish, and I believe in G-d. My mother is Jewish, but my father isn't and as I grew up I did not feel very strongly connected to the Jewish community. I did not go to temple or temple school or have a Bat Mitzvah. We would celebrate Passover and the high holy days and these were very important to me, even as a little girl.
I have always felt attracted to other Jews, feeling a great affinity for them, like a family tie, but this feeling was always coupled with a great sense of insecurity. I was always afraid that I wasn't "Jewish enough."
Has anyone else ever felt this way?

NON Jews NOT allowed.

someone posted this on tribe...but it case you missed it.
brings up a lot of issues...end the end i think it is a family issue...
i am weary of "public policies" the backlash, the anti-semitism that can arise...the beginning. i personally think it's scary.

and if a christian school made it a policy that their students were not allowed to date jews (well those against interfaith marriages would be happy) or no blacks...then what?

what is the difference? i mean i do not want any of my boys to intermarry...because i want their children to be jews...so i tell them i dont care what colour she is as long as she is jewish or she converts. but if they dont, what can i do? nothing but love anyway.

reminds me of when i worked at the local JCC... two of the women there, in their 20's not jewish, decided to go to a "jewish singles" group meeting at barnes and nobles. they later told me they were upset and left because they were saying that everyone there was to be jewish. i said what do you expect? if you went to a catholic singles get together its for catholics...if it is for christians....then the same.

but for some reason its not to be the same with jews....

regardless of how you feel about interfaith "marriage..what do you think about the article? the school. i personally do not feel this should have been an announcement. it has the potential of opening up a pandora's box....
the time was not Jewish, headed to the principal's office to beg the
administration to reconsider the dictate.

While the school saw the directive as a way to stave off interfaith
dating, Bertrand and other students at the Hartsdale school said it
encouraged creating a "self-imposed ghetto" that could generate
resentment and even stoke the flames of anti-Semitism.

"It was intended to promote Jewish continuity, but instead it insults
non-Jews, it insults Solomon Schechter students, and it doesn't
reflect well on the school," Bertrand said of the Jewish-only prom
policy, which remains in place today.

Worse, she said, the decree might inadvertently prove racist.

"Most people can pass as Jewish," said Bertrand, now 18, noting that
school officials would be hard pressed to determine at the door who
was Jewish. "If the school was going to investigate students they
suspected brought non-Jewish dates, the only red flag would be if
someone was another race."

As the school year winds down, and with prom season in full swing, the
debate over who makes an acceptable prom date is causing friction
among students, parents and faculty at some Jewish day schools.

The subject has been polarizing not just at Schechter, but also at
pluralistic community day schools, where students span the Jewish
ideological gamut.

Marc Kramer, the executive director of the New York-based Ravsak, an
umbrella group representing more than 90 Jewish community day schools
in North America, said the debate is playing out with increased frequency.

"The core argument on one side is that Jewish day schools should
foster the value of Jews marrying other Jews and building Jewish
families, and that value should [permeate] the culture of the school,
including the prom," Kramer said. "The other argument — equally valid,
but wildly different — is that … a policy saying students can only
bring Jewish dates to the prom oversteps the boundaries of what a
school should dictate."

Kramer surmised that the issue has become most polarizing at
non-movement-affiliated community schools because there is an
expectation of "maximum inclusiveness and minimal intrusiveness."

"These schools make a concerted effort not to tell families what to
do, to serve families without judging them," he said. "People are
discussing, `Is it a school issue or a family issue?' and of course
people are reacting on both sides."

Carol Pankin, whose two teenaged sons attend Gann Academy, a community
school in Waltham, Mass., where prom policy emerged as a hot-button
issue this year, opposes interfaith dating, but said parents — not
schools — should be the ones making decisions about dating and proms.

"If a 17-year-old is dating someone who isn't Jewish, I feel it's the
parents' responsibility," she said. "They should be the ones saying,
`We don't want you to do this.' "

Pankin says interfaith dating and inviting a non-Jewish date to the
prom are separate issues.

"[Jewish-only] policies raise proms to a level that they're really
not," she said, noting that many teens today attend proms with friends
or go stag. "They're making it more of a couples thing when it's
really just a fun night when everyone dresses up."

She added rhetorically: "There are so many school activities, should a
non-Jewish person not be allowed to attend any of them? Should kids
not be allowed to have non-Jewish friends?"

But Gann Academy Headmaster Rabbi Daniel Lehmann said there is a
greater assumption of intimacy associated with the prom than with
other school functions.

"We try to make it clear that bringing non-Jews to watch a school play
or a basketball game is OK," Rabbi Lehmann said.

Gann students and faculty weighed in on the issue recently during a
heated but respectful lunchtime "Debate Midrash."

According to Rabbi Lehmann, some students argued that dating patterns
are significant, even in high school. Others contended that trying to
control personal decisions is bound to cause resentment among teens
and alienate non-Jewish, intermarried parents of Gann students.

Jonathan Sarna, professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis
University, said as more intermarried couples send their children to
Jewish day schools, some parents are "reluctant to be taught that
intermarriage is wrong."

"[The debate] represents two clashing worldviews in the Jewish
community: those who see intermarriage as a challenge and those who
see it as an opportunity," he said.

Ultimately, Gann's board of directors issued a written prom policy
that Rabbi Lehmann called "a very strong statement about the bo
